What is mica?

What if you were told that little children had to risk their lives everyday just for you to get your cosmetics? What if there were children who got hurt from getting mica from the mines just for the sake of makeup? Mica gives the makeup it’s sparkle and the need for mica has grown enormously during last couple of years. You can find a whole episode from Shady where they visit these mica mines in India and talk to some of the children working there. Even though mica is widely popular, the synthetic mica offers a lot more: high purity, more consistency, cleaner look, greater reflectivity and it can stand higher temperatures!

How can I help?

So what can we buy instead? There is synthetic mica that looks as great and doesn’t have the possibility of child’s death being attached to it. For example LUSH that is based on ethical sourcing uses only synthetic mica. To get you started visit some of these following pages as well as do your own research. Slice of the moon and  micamoma. Also check out some of these mica-free makeup products you must have: Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara, Covergirl 3 in 1 Stay Fabulous Foundation, NYX Wonder Pencil, Pacifica Aquarian Gaze Mascara, Essence Lash Princess Mascara, Besame Cream Blush in Apricot.

You can also spread the word and let more people know about this issue and also stop buying products with mica. Most likely you can check your makeup-bag right now and find several products that have mica in the formula. It’s good to remember that mica is not coming only from mines that use child labor but there is still a chance. As long as the government doesn’t fix the issue by keeping these children safe we can focus in helping by what products we buy. Donating is also one of the great options to get children out of the mines and help them get a brighter future.

About the video

Watch the episode from Shady from the link above. This episode will give you a realistic picture on what it’s like for these children who work at the mines. There are interviews with some of the children who have gotten hurt as well as a representative from the ministry of women and child development. To watch this video make sure you got about 19 minutes for it. You’ll learn how there is really no reason to use cosmetic with natural mica and as I said before synthetic mica is even better when it’s used in makeup. These families in India make a living with mica and that’s not the issue. The fact that children are involved and some of them die is. Through the Children’s foundation more than 3000 children have been already rescued from child labor and now they’re enrolled in school. Change is happening slowly but surely.

Right now the only ways to help seem to be donating for the Children’s foundation and switching to synthetic mica products. Consumers and companies have a big effect on this issue. Seek out companies that are transparent about their products. This is a real issue that not many recognize but many could help to improve with one simple choice.

  1. Long time supporter, and thought I’d drop a comment.

Your wordpress site is very sleek – hope you don’t mind me asking what theme you’re using?
(and don’t mind if I steal it? :P)

I just launched my site –also built in wordpress like yours– but the
theme slows (!) the site down quite a bit.

In case you have a minute, you can find it by searching for “royal cbd” on Google (would appreciate any feedback) –
    it’s still in the works.

Keep up the good work– and hope you all take care of yourself
    during the coronavirus scare!
